What Is Telehealth?

Telehealth is a modern approach to healthcare delivery that uses telecommunications technology—like video conferencing, secure messaging, and digital platforms—to connect patients with healthcare providers remotely. Instead of traveling to a clinic, patients can consult with physicians, nurse practitioners, specialists, mental health professionals, and other care providers from the comfort of their own homes or wherever they happen to be, as long as they have access to the internet.

Whether you need a routine follow-up, medication management, mental health counseling, or a consultation for a new health concern, telehealth makes it possible to receive care without the time, stress, and cost of travel.

ven nonexistent in the early stages. This makes regular testing essential—especially if you have a new partner, multiple partners, or have engaged in unprotected sex.

Getting tested not only protects your health, but also helps prevent the spread of infections to others. At COLFS Medical Clinic, we provide low-cost and confidential STI testing in San Diego, ensuring access to quality care for everyone—regardless of their financial situation.

The Benefits of Telehealth

1. Convenience at Your Fingertips
One of the most significant advantages of telehealth is its convenience. With a telehealth appointment, there's no need to worry about commuting to the clinic, finding parking, or sitting in a waiting room for your name to be called. Appointments can be scheduled during breaks, before or after work, or in between daily tasks—whatever fits your lifestyle best.
This flexibility allows patients to prioritize their health without needing to take time off from work, arrange childcare, or deal with the logistics of transportation. It’s a particularly helpful solution for parents, busy professionals, and anyone managing multiple responsibilities.

2. Improved Access to Care
Telehealth is also a game-changer for those who live in rural or underserved areas, where access to medical facilities or certain specialists can be limited. Rather than waiting weeks or even months for an appointment in a faraway clinic, patients can connect with the care they need in a much more timely and efficient manner.
Through telehealth, COLFS Medical Clinic expands access to our full range of healthcare services, making sure no patient is left behind due to location or mobility challenges.

3. Continuity of Care
Telehealth allows for more consistent follow-up care, especially for patients managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or mental health concerns. Routine virtual check-ins with your provider ensure that you stay on track with your treatment plan, medications, and overall health goals, helping to prevent complications or hospitalizations.

Our Telehealth Platform: Doxy.me

At COLFS Medical Clinic, we utilize a trusted telehealth platform called Doxy.me to conduct virtual appointments. Doxy.me is a HIPAA-compliant, secure, and encrypted service, ensuring that your personal health information remains confidential and protected at all times.

There’s no need to download an app or create a new account. Doxy.me is easy to use and works right from your web browser. Whether you're using a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, you can connect with your provider through a private and professional video call.

How to Schedule and Prepare for Your Telehealth Visit

We’ve designed our telehealth process to be as straightforward and user-friendly as possible. Here’s a step-by-step overview of what you can expect:

1. Request an Appointment

To schedule a telehealth visit, simply contact our office through our website or by phone. Let us know your availability, and we’ll find a time that works for you.

2. Pre-Visit Call

Approximately 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment, a member of our staff will call you to confirm your visit. During this call, we will verify your contact information, discuss your current symptoms or concerns, and ensure your medical record is up to date. This step helps your provider prepare for your visit and maximize the time you have together.

3. Receive Your Link

After the pre-visit call, you will receive a secure link via email or text message. This link will take you directly to your provider’s virtual waiting room on Doxy.me. The link is unique to your visit and should be kept private.

4. Check-In

When it’s time for your appointment, simply click the link using your preferred device. Enter your name, click the “Check-In” button, and wait in the virtual waiting room until your provider joins the call. It’s that simple!

Once connected, your provider will conduct the appointment just like an in-person visit—listening to your concerns, asking questions, offering advice, and discussing any necessary next steps.

Types of Appointments Available via Telehealth

While not every medical issue can be addressed virtually, many types of visits are well-suited for telehealth. Some of the common services we provide through telehealth include:

  • General consultations and follow-up appointments

  • Prescription refills and medication management

  • Nutritional counseling

  • Behavioral health and therapy sessions

  • Chronic disease management

  • Pre-natal consultations and postpartum check-ins

  • Lab result reviews

  • COVID-19 symptom assessments

  • Women’s wellness education

If your provider determines that an in-person evaluation or physical exam is necessary, they will help you schedule a follow-up visit at one of our clinic locations.

To make the most of your telehealth visit, here are a few tips:

  • Make sure your device is charged and you have a stable internet connection.

  • Find a quiet, private space for your appointment, free from distractions.

  • Use headphones for better audio clarity and privacy, if available.

  • Have any recent symptoms, medications, or questions ready to discuss with your provider.

  • Log in a few minutes early to ensure everything is working properly.
